Moments that made EWC 2023 great: Black and Masson dig deep for Bol d’Or victory

Having experienced an FIM Endurance World Championship season of more lows than highs, Yoshimura SERT Motul was determined to end the 2023 campaign on top in the Bol d’Or last September, a race that would mark Sylvain Guintoli’s final EWC outing with Suzuki power. Despite Gregg Black and Étienne Masson competing as a duo for the final nine hours after Guintoli fell ill, Yoshimura SERT Motul triumphed by a clear margin. That was despite Black being one of eight riders to fall on oil at the end of the Mistral Straight this morning, which triggered a lengthy safety car period.“It’s incredible,” said UK-born, France-based Black said at the time. “We’ve had a pretty hard season but we’ve been performing, so to finish the season like this with this result is just incredible. The team did a great job, my team-mates also. It was a hard one but we got it and we got the pace and we could win the Bol d’Or. We’re really happy.”

EWC explainer: How riders keep fit

Riders go to great lengths to be fit and healthy for each round of the FIM Endurance World Championship. And with the 2024 season getting under way next month, Yamalube YART Yamaha EWC Official Team’s Marvin Fritz gives an insight into how he’s staying in shape ahead of the 24 Heures Motos from 18-21 April.Be ready to fight: “For the 24-hour races you cannot train, it just comes and you have to fight through it. I do a lot of swimming, cycling and sauna. The 24-hour races are pretty hard and then in Suzuka you lose three kilos in one hour riding and you need to ride three times.”Three meals a day keeps the rivals at bay: “When I am at home in the morning I will have some egg and bread and avocado. Later my girlfriend will make some rice and chicken and vegetables. In the evening I just eat something light like a salad and a little desert of yoghurt with some fruits.”Share the load: “I do a lot of running and cycling and work on the strength and the concentration. Often I go cycling in the afternoon with a friend for two or three hours.”
